  • Understanding Anxiety: Recognizing the Signs and Responses
Anxiety, a common human experience, manifests in various forms, from mild unease to debilitating panic attacks. Anxiety is the body’s natural alarm system, it  exists to protect us by scanning for danger and preparing us to respond. When a threat is perceived–whether physical, emotional, relational, or imagines–the nervous system activates to keep us safe. The challenge with anxiety is not that the alarm is going off, but that it can become overactive or out of sync with present-day reality. The body reacts as if the danger is happening now, even when the situation does not actually require protections. Anxiety often lives more in the body than in logic. It can show up in tightness, restlessness, racing thoughts, shallow breathing, or a sense of urgency. These feelings can push us toward action aimed at reducing this discomfort and restoring safety. However, sometimes those action steps are not always attuned with what we are truly needing. We might move to control, perfectionism, avoidance, procrastination, yelling, reassurance seeking, people pleasing, catastrophizing, etc. When you feel activated and anxious, take a deep breath to notice how your body is reacting and what might feel threatening in your life right now. What is your anxiety tying to keep you safe from? With awareness, anxiety responses can soften and allow the nervous system to learn that safety, flexibility, and connection are possible in the moment.
